Abundance of Katherines
Have you ever had a name that attracts you so much that all your girlfriends/ boyfriends are called like that? I think not, but that’s what happened to Colin.
Colin is a prodigy and has just broken up with Katherine XIX, Colin has had 19 girlfriends named Katherine. He and his best friend Hassan are going on a road trip, they take a break in Gutshot because they want to visit the grave of Archduke Ferdinand. Their guide is called Lindsey, her mom recognizes Colin from Kranialkidz, the tv program Colin was in. And so, it comes that Colin and Hassan are working for Hollis (mother Linsey). In the meantime, Lindsey and Colin get to know each other and become great friends, there is also a little attraction between the two. Colin is also trying to write a theorem about the probability of relationships, he thinks he can write a formula about every relationship.
I think it’s a great book because it is funny, well written but it will also make you think about deeper stuff, it gets really serious too. While reading It you want to know what’s going to happen next which makes it very interesting and fun to read. And I think It’s nice that there is kind of like a plot twist at the end. The book made me think which is always nice, there is a lot of recognition, even Colin goes to stuff every teenager goes through and it’s interesting to see how he handles the situations, but I found the most resemblances in Hassan. I thought it was also beautiful to see how the characters develop, at first Hassan was a closed book, he didn’t like to talk about his feelings, and he was really lazy, he didn’t want to do anything with his life but throughout the book he gets more open and realizes that he should do something. In the beginning Colin was pretty selfish but most of all he cared to much about what people thought of him and he wanted to matter to much, he wanted to do something that nobody could, to be special. He thought that otherwise he’d be boring and that if people would really knew him, they would hate him. But at the end he realizes life is not about mattering, he can never matter enough, people will always forget him at some point, the future will come, and nobody will know him, it’s the memories that will last forever so why would he waste time doing and learning things that have already been discovered. I think that is beautiful, I learned a lot from reading the book, it’s beautiful when a book has a lot of hidden lessons in it.
